AC Replacement or AC Repair?

When it comes to your HVAC system, one of the toughest decisions you may face is whether you should repair or replace your equipment.

A primary concern for most is of course, cost. Most people don’t want to spend several thousands of dollars for a new heating or cooling system, especially if they can extend the life of their current system for substantially less money.

However, homeowners need to consider other factors such as the peace of mind you can get from knowing that your HVAC system will be reliable throughout a hot Summer season, or cooler Winter.

When considering replacement of your heating and cooling equipment, you should also take into account any fіnаnсіng орtіоnѕ available. Sometimes you can get a great deal, such as zero interest financing, during the Winter months on a new HVAC system.

When should you consider replacing your HVAC equipment?

If your older HVAC system requires costly, ever-increasing repairs, year  after year, and your warranty has expired, you may want to seriously consider replacing it.

When your HVAC system is really old (15 years or more), it is less energy efficient than those built today. That means in addition to the cost of repairing it, you’ll also spend more money on the electric bill. So, when you begin to see that your energy bill continues to escalate year after year, it may be time to consider getting a more energy efficient system.

Additionally, if your AC unit is so old that it uses R-22 refrigerant, it may indeed be a good time to replace your aging AC system. That’s because R-22 refrigerant is an ozone-depleting substance that is no longer being produced.  In fact, as of January 1, 2020, production and importation of R-22 refrigerant became illegal in the United States. This means that the supply of remaining R-22 refrigerant is limited and therefore, very expensive to obtain.

Or perhaps yоu’rе making frequent adjustments to your thermostat in an effort to maintain a comfortable climate, but your home still feels соnѕtаntlу ѕtuffу, damp, or not cool enough.

You could also be noticing that your HVAC system has become noticeably noisier. While this may not be a conclusive sign of an eminent replacement, it’s worth getting a HVAC expert to evaluate the condition of your equipment.

When should you consider repairing your HVAC equipment?

If your HVAC equipment is still under warranty, it usually makes more sense to repair it as a manufacturer’s warranty should cover the cost to replace a defective/faulty part within the specified warranty period.

On average, hеаt рumрѕ, аіr соndіtіоnеrѕ аnd furnасеѕ have a life expectancy of between 12-15 уеаrѕ here in Phoenix, Arizona. Thus, generally speaking, when you HVAC system is less than 7-10 years old, it’s usually unnecessary to do a full replacement.
